Managing contact attributes

What are contact attributes?

Each contact in Sendigram can store more than just an email address. You can enrich your database with additional fields, such as name, location, company, preferences, or custom tags. Managing these parameters helps you personalize campaigns, create dynamic segments, and improve targeting.

What's the Difference Between Fields and Tags?

In Sendigram, both Fields and Tags are used to store information about your contacts and segment your audience, but they serve very different purposes. Understanding when to use each will help you organize your contacts and send highly targeted campaigns.

Think of a contact's profile as a file cabinet drawer. Fields are the printed forms inside the file (like a tax form or application), while Tags are the quick sticky notes attached to the front of the file.

Contact Fields

A contact field is a structured container that stores permanent, specific data about a contact.

Each Field has a name (like "First Name") and a corresponding value for each contact (like "Jane"). A contact can only have one value per field.

Use Fields to answer questions like "What" or "Who":

  • What is their name? (Field: First Name)
  • What is their city? (Field: City)
  • Who is their account manager? (Field: Salesperson)
  • When is their birthday? (Field: Birthday)

Key characteristics of Fields:

  • Structured Data: They store specific data points (text, numbers, dates).
  • Permanent (Mostly): They store fixed attributes (like a name, email address, or phone number).
  • Used for Personalization: Fields are essential for personalizing emails. You use Fields when you write "Hello, [First Name]!"
  • Default vs. Custom: Sendigram comes with default fields (like Email, First Name). You can also create your own custom fields to store any data unique to your business (like Customer_ID or Subscription_Plan).
