Adding Shopify domain
If you bought your domain through Shopify or transferred it to Shopify, you connect it to Sendigram by adding six DNS records in your Shopify admin. It takes about 10 minutes, and verification usually completes within an hour.
Once your domain is verified, your emails are sent from your own domain and pass the SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks that Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook require from bulk senders.
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Access to the Shopify admin of the store that owns the domain
- A Sendigram account
- A Shopify-managed domain. If your domain is registered elsewhere (for example, GoDaddy) and only connected to your store, add the records at that provider instead. Shopify only lets you edit DNS for domains it manages.
Step 1. Add your domain in Sendigram
- Sign in to Sendigram.
- Open the profile menu and select Sender settings.
- Click Add domain.
- Enter your domain name, for example yourbrand.com, and confirm.
Sendigram shows the DNS records for your domain. Keep this window open, or come back to it later from the domain's View action. You will copy each record into Shopify in Step 3.
Step 2. Open your DNS settings in Shopify
- In a new browser tab, open your Shopify admin.
- Go to Settings → Domains.
- Click the domain you added in Sendigram.
- In the DNS settings section, click Manage.
Don't change Shopify's default A, AAAA and CNAME records. They keep your store online. You only need to add new records.
Step 3. Add the Sendigram records in Shopify
Add all six records from Sendigram: three DKIM records, one MX record, one SPF record and one DMARC record. For each one:
- Click Add custom record and select the record type shown in Sendigram.
- Fill in Name and the value field as described in the table below. For CNAME and MX records the value field is Points to. For TXT records it is TXT value.
- For the MX record, enter 10 in Priority.
- Click Confirm.
Important: Shopify adds your domain to the Name automatically. If Sendigram shows a host such as sendigram.yourbrand.com, enter only sendigram in Shopify. Otherwise the record ends up at sendigram.yourbrand.com.yourbrand.com and verification fails.
| Record | Type in Shopify | Name in Shopify | Value in Shopify |
| DKIM (x3) | CNAME | The part before your domain, ending in ._domainkey | Copy from Sendigram, one value per record |
| MX | MX | sendigram | feedback-smtp.us-east-1.amazonses.com, Priority 10 |
| SPF | TXT | sendigram | v=spf1 include:amazonses.com ~all |
| DMARC | TXT | _dmarc | v=DMARC1; p=none; |
Always copy the values from your own Sendigram window. The table shows how each field maps, so check your screen if anything differs.
Already have an SPF record? You don't need to change it. Sendigram's SPF record sits on the sendigram subdomain, not on your root domain, so it doesn't conflict with Shopify's.
Already have a DMARC record? Shopify sets one up automatically for domains bought through Shopify. If the list already has a TXT record named _dmarc, keep it and skip the Sendigram DMARC record. A domain can only have one DMARC record, and a second one breaks email authentication for both Sendigram and Shopify Email.
Step 4. Verify your domain in Sendigram
- Go back to Sendigram and open Sender settings.
- Find your domain and click Check DNS records.
Shopify DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect. If the check doesn't pass right away, wait a while and click Check DNS records again.
Once your domain is verified, add a sender address on that domain in the Sender address tab and start sending.
Troubleshooting
- You don't see DNS settings for your domain. The domain is registered with a third-party provider and only connected to your store. Add the six records at that provider. If your store only has a myshopify.com address, you need to add a custom domain first.
- You can't add the MX record. Some domain types bought through Shopify don't allow custom MX records. Contact Shopify Support and ask them to add the record for you.
- Verification still fails after 24 hours. Compare each record in Shopify with Sendigram, character by character. The most common cause is the domain repeated in the Name field (see Step 3). Also check for extra spaces in the value.
- You use Shopify Email or another email app too. That's fine. Each service uses its own DKIM records, so add Sendigram's records alongside the existing ones. Just keep a single DMARC record.
- Still stuck? Contact Sendigram support and include your domain name and a screenshot of your Shopify DNS settings.
