Adding Squarespace domain

If your domain is registered with Squarespace, you connect it to Sendigram by adding six DNS records in your Squarespace account. It takes about 10 minutes, and verification usually completes within an hour.

This also applies to domains that moved to Squarespace from Google Domains. Their DNS is now managed only in Squarespace.

Once your domain is verified, your emails are sent from your own domain and pass the SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks that Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook require from bulk senders.

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • Access to the Squarespace account that manages your domain
  • A Sendigram account
  • Your domain using Squarespace nameservers. If your domain is only connected to a Squarespace site but registered and managed elsewhere, add the records at that provider instead. See Troubleshooting below.

Step 1. Add your domain in Sendigram

  1. Sign in to Sendigram.
  2. Open the profile menu and select Sender settings.
  3. Click Add domain.
  4. Enter your domain name, for example yourbrand.com, and confirm.

Sendigram shows the DNS records for your domain. Keep this window open, or come back to it later from the domain's View action. You will copy each record into Squarespace in Step 3.

Step 2. Open your DNS settings in Squarespace

  1. Sign in to your Squarespace account in a new browser tab, or go to domains.squarespace.com.
  2. Open your Domains dashboard and select the domain you added in Sendigram.
  3. Click DNS settings (in some views, DNS and then DNS settings).
  4. Scroll down to Custom records.

Leave any existing records as they are. You only need to add new ones. If you don't see DNS settings at all, see Troubleshooting below.

Step 3. Add the Sendigram records in Squarespace

Add all six records from Sendigram: three DKIM records, one MX record, one SPF record and one DMARC record. For each one:

  1. Under Custom records, click Add record.
  2. Select the record Type shown in Sendigram.
  3. Fill in Host and Data (and Priority for the MX record) as described in the table below.
  4. Leave TTL at the default.
  5. Click Save.

Important: Squarespace adds your domain to the Host automatically. If Sendigram shows a host such as sendigram.yourbrand.com, enter only sendigram in Squarespace. Otherwise the record ends up at sendigram.yourbrand.com.yourbrand.com and verification fails.

Record Type in Squarespace Host in Squarespace Data in Squarespace
DKIM (x3) CNAME The part before your domain, ending in ._domainkey Copy from Sendigram, one value per record
MX MX sendigram feedback-smtp.us-east-1.amazonses.com, Priority 10
SPF TXT sendigram v=spf1 include:amazonses.com ~all
DMARC TXT _dmarc v=DMARC1; p=none;

Always copy the values from your own Sendigram window. The table shows how each field maps, so check your screen if anything differs. Paste TXT values without quotation marks. Squarespace adds them for you.

Already have an SPF record? Squarespace allows only one SPF record per domain, but that limit applies to your root domain. Sendigram's SPF record sits on the sendigram subdomain, so it doesn't conflict with your existing one.

Already have a DMARC record? If Squarespace already lists a TXT record with the host _dmarc, keep it and skip the Sendigram DMARC record. A domain can only have one DMARC record.

Step 4. Verify your domain in Sendigram

  1. Go back to Sendigram and open Sender settings.
  2. Find your domain and click Check DNS records.

DNS changes usually take effect within an hour, but they can take up to 48 hours to spread globally. If the check doesn't pass right away, wait a while and click Check DNS records again.

Once your domain is verified, add a sender address on that domain in the Sender address tab and start sending.

Troubleshooting

  • You don't see DNS settings for your domain. Your domain is registered with another provider and only connected to your Squarespace site (Squarespace calls this DNS Connect). Add the six records at the provider where you bought the domain, such as GoDaddy.
  • Records are saved but verification fails. Check where your domain's nameservers point. If they point to another provider, such as Cloudflare, records added in Squarespace have no effect. Add them at that provider instead.
  • Verification still fails after 48 hours. Compare each record in Squarespace with Sendigram, character by character. The most common cause is the domain repeated in the Host field (see Step 3). Also check for extra spaces or quotation marks in the Data field.
  • Squarespace says the record already exists. For _dmarc, keep the existing record. For any other record, check whether it was left from an earlier attempt and edit it to match Sendigram rather than adding a duplicate.
  • Still stuck? Contact Sendigram support and include your domain name and a screenshot of your Squarespace custom records.
